We are pleased to announce Virgin Media as one of the sponsors for this year’s SMEDIAS. Virgin Media is sponsoring the category- News Photographer of the Year.

Virgin Media is one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. So how did it all start and what should you know about Virgin Media?

Virgin Media Ireland is a telecommunications company that provides broadband, TV, and phone services to residential and business customers. It operates as part of the global Virgin Media brand, which is owned by Liberty Global, a multinational telecommunications company.

The history of Virgin Media Ireland dates back to 2003 when the company was initially established as Chorus Communications. Chorus was one of Ireland’s leading cable TV and broadband providers. In 2005, Chorus merged with NTL Ireland (which was originally known as ESAT Telecom, founded by Denis O’Brien) to form Chorus NTL. This created one of the largest cable operators in Ireland.

In 2008, the company rebranded as UPC Ireland after being acquired by Liberty Global, reflecting its global branding strategy. UPC Ireland continued to grow its customer base, providing internet, TV, and telephony services.

In 2015, UPC Ireland was rebranded as Virgin Media Ireland after Liberty Global adopted the Virgin Media name across its international operations. This marked the beginning of a new era for the company, focusing on expanding its network and services to meet the growing demand for high-speed broadband and digital TV.

Virgin Media Ireland has since continued to develop and expand its offerings, including the launch of advanced broadband speeds and the introduction of new TV services. The company remains a significant player in the Irish telecommunications market, competing with other major providers like Eir and Sky Ireland.

We would like to thank Virgin Media once again for their sponsorship!
