With back to uni season quickly approaching, it can be overwhelming to dive head first into academics and studying again, which is why it is so vital to find that work / life balance that enables you to enjoy the little things whilst still getting work done! In this list, I will be giving you the best cosy games to enjoy this back to school season.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley has recently become the quintessential cosy game to relax and turn your mind off to, as it encourages you to play at your own pace as you mingle with the friendly village characters and build your own farm from the ground up. One of the most appealing aspects of this game is that there is no one way to play it — you choose how you want to play; you can farm, mine, fish, forage, raise animals, build friendships with every character in the village and even build a romantic relationship with your favourite bachelor or bachelorette.

Firewatch

Firewatch is a visually stunning adventure game that thrusts its players into an atmosphere of mystery and stunning imagery. The game is set in the late 1980’s as you play as a man named Henry who has escaped from his home life to become a fire lookout in the scenic wilderness.

Sims

This pick undoubtedly speaks for itself as its endless customisation options make for a cosy yet addictive gaming experience. This game provides its players with a delightfully unrealistic simulation of life as you customise your own sims and have total free reign over how you decide to play.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing has foraged its way into our hearts with its adorable graphics and lovable characters. While the majority of the games’ success is credited to the Covid 19 virus, as it came about during a time of global loneliness and a desperate need for escapism, it is still one of the most relaxing games that romanticises simple tasks and the mundanity of everyday life.

The Long Dark

The Long Dark is by a mile the most atmospheric and visually stunning games on this list. You play as a stranded survivor as you navigate the dangers of the wilderness. The game has varying difficulties and a selection of differing locations that you can choose from.

While going back to university after a long summer can be overwhelming to most, finding a balance between working and alone time is so essential to your mental health. Finding a cosy game to mark the beginning of your relaxing evening routine is vital to avoiding burn out this semester. Good luck to any new or returning students this academic year!
