Joseph Canning, famously known as Joe Canning, was born on the eleventh of October 1988 in Portumna, County Galway. Canning has six older siblings called Frank, Séamus, Ollie, Davy, Deirdre, and Ivan. He studied business and marketing at the Limerick Institute of Technology between 2007 and 2013. He later became a publican in Athlone and restaurateur in Galway.

Canning was brought up in a loving family who were enthusiastic about hurling, leading him to become the greatest centre-forward hurler in Ireland. He achieved five All-Stars and in 2017 was given the title GAA-GPA Hurler of the Year. He also won seven trophies, including three National Hurling Leagues, an All-Ireland Championship, and three Leinster Championships. He accomplished eleven different club titles, including five Galway titles, four All-Ireland titles, and two Leinster titles. During his career he played for Portumna, Limerick Institute of Technology, and Galway minor and under 21, as well as Galway senior. On the twenty-eighth of July 2021, he declared his retirement as an inter-county hurler.

Since his retirement, he has had various jobs. In September 2021, Canning was selected as brand ambassador for Audi and ambassador for UNICEF. Since 2022, Canning has appeared in RTÉ’s sports hurling championship coverage and appeared in Laochra Gael in 2023 for an episode. He also became a husband to Meghan Hoare in November 2022.

On the tenth of October 2024, Joe Canning released his autobiography, Joe Canning: My Story, reflecting on his personal and professional life through the triumphs, such as winning the numerous awards, and the deepest sorrows, especially when both of his parents were battling cancer. It’s a perfect book choice for all sports fans!
