Research Ireland, the new, competitive research and innovation funding agency in Ireland, is the sponsor of the Journalism Relating to Science and Technology Award at the 2025 National Student Media Awards.

Ireland’s largest competitive research and innovation funding agency, Research Ireland was established in August 2024 following the amalgamation of Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council. 

With an annual budget of €300M, it funds world class research in the areas of science, technology, engineering, maths, arts, humanities, and the social sciences, 

Research Ireland is developing Ireland into a global innovation leader where discovery and the generation of new knowledge can help solve the greatest societal, environmental and economic challenges of our time.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student working across any media discipline to explore science and technology journalism and content creation. We want the journalists of tomorrow to help bring these stories to the public and we want to help kick start your media career!

Submission Guidelines:

  1. The Research Ireland Award for Journalism Relating to Science and Technology will be awarded to any student who was written and published an article, in any form of student media, relating to research in the area of science, technology, engineering, maths, particularly where it impacts the public.
  2. There are so many topics to investigate – from environmental issues such as water or air pollution to artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles to food scarcity, biodiversity to future energy sources, and health and wellbeing to smart manufacturing – the list is endless. Your work could include an interview with researchers on the topic you’ve chosen and should be easily understandable for any reader. 
  3. The winning journalist in this category will receive a prize fund of €1,000 as part of the Research Ireland Student Journalism Bursary and will be invited to write an article to be published on ResearchIreland.ie.
  4. Your article must have been published since February 2024– remember, that if you do not have access to a student newspaper or publication, you can email editor@oxygen.ie and Oxygen.ie will publish your article!
  5. Submissions open 14th February 2025 and close 12th March 2025.
