The UCC Journalism and Media Society are delighted to announce that they will host the 7th annual UCC Journalism Conference in Devere Hall, UCC on Thursday the 12th of February.
This year’s conference, proudly sponsored by the Irish Independent and in association with the River Lee Hotel, will comprise of two very topical panels.
Our first panel is Bias in the Media, featuring a diverse range of speakers ranging from political bias to gender bias.
Our second panel is Mental Health which will focus on the coverage of this topic in the media, or rather lack thereof, featuring a variety of guest speakers from journalists to familiar faces.
The conference, which is a must attend event for those interested in, working in, and studying journalism and media, has proven to be a great success in the past, hosting a wide variety of industry speakers from areas such as print, broadcast and radio journalism speaking on issues from conflict and investigative reporting to the ‘death of the newspaper’.
This year will be no different, with established and informative speakers including TD Micheál Martin, Irish Journalist of the Year Michael Clifford, Irish Independent Health and Lifestyle Editor Yvonne Hogan, Political Editor of The Journal.ie Hugh O’Connell, Mother of teen advocate Dónal Walsh Elma Walsh, and Editor of TCD’S University Times and TCD SU Communications Officer Samuel Riggs, with more speakers to be confirmed.
Speaking this week, Dion Davis, 2015 Conference Convener and first year Arts student, stated “We are delighted to have such established speakers discussing key issues in the media today.”
“The UCC Journalism and Media society has a strong tradition of preparing students for careers in media and we hope that students and others alike will take the opportunity to engage in these debates on core issues in today’s media landscape.”
Admission is €7 with a €3 early bird, €5 student, and group offers available. Tickets will be on sale on UCC this week and can also be reserved for payment on the day by emailing journoconferenceconvener@gmail.com.
