Submission Guidelines 

SMEDIAs 2025 European Commission Award for Journalism Relating to European Issues Submission Guidelines 

The award will be presented to the best article on the topic of EU affairs published in a student  publication during the year preceding the 2025 SMEDIAs entry deadline, which is 12 March 2025, as specified on the Student Marketing Network website. 

Enter the Commission category for Journalism relating to European Issues for a chance to win a €1,000 prize. The award will be presented to the best article on the topic of EU affairs, which was published in a student publication during the year preceding the 2025 SMEDIAs entry deadline, which is 12 March 2025, as specified on the Student Marketing Network website. 

Below is the list of areas that your article could incorporate, you must include at least one. 

1. The EU and Me  

2. EU enlargement and accession of new countries to the EU 

3. The 2024 European Parliament election  

4. The EU’s Role in the World (e.g. trade, development aid, migration, diplomacy, EU response  to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or to the Israel-Hamas War) 

5. A European Green Deal to protect the Environment and Climate  

6. Europe and the Digital Age 

7. Rural Development, Agriculture and the CAP 

Rules 

Entries for the EU SMEDIA Award can include the following forms of media: in print, online or audio journalism in the form of radio or podcasts.  

Entries must include both a scan of the publication and a word file containing the article if written or  both the link to published audio file and the original recording.  

Entries must be in English. 

The competition is open to all third-level students in Ireland. 

Only one entry per student is allowed and the work must be the student’s own. 

The deadline for submission of entries, as outlined in the Student Marketing Network rules, is the  12th March 2025. 

Applications will open on the 14th of February 2025 as outlined on the Student Marketing Network  website. 

* If an article is submitted where the publication date is over 12 months it may be admitted on the  discretion of the European Commission Representation.

The winners 

There will be five students shortlisted, and the winning student will be announced at the SMEDIAs  Ceremony in 2025. 

A jury will select the winning article based on the following criteria: 

• Research and knowledge demonstrated of the chosen topic 

• Originality and creativity 

• Quality of writing and ease of reading 

• Spelling and grammar
