After ushering in the New Year with concerts and Christmas celebrations, we at Oxygen.ie are excited to kick off 2025 with a bang. We are taking an optimistic approach to the next year by looking at new experiences and trends in the travel industry and encouraging students to make the most of their free time, wherever they may be!

Everyone eventually needs a break from the monotony of their daily routine or the hectic nature of work or full-time education. Therefore, students really should shatter the everyday mould by visiting new surroundings and trying new experiences. Travelling abroad offers people new perspectives on the world and their place in it. Opportunities to try new foods, hobbies, and experiences are more plentiful and people do not want to let that novelty fade once they return home.

There is growing interest in “off the beaten track” locations and activities, making them more attractive to the average holiday goer. This usually includes venturing to less explored terrain like Antarctica or engaging in adrenaline-filled adventures. Abbey Travel offers extensive and all-inclusive packages on their website. From overnight camping in the deserts of Jordan to taking safari tours of South Africa to sampling foods of Hanoi, travellers have countless opportunities to experience fascinating cultures and breathtaking scenery. These packages tend to be more expensive as you really need more time to do all these engaging activities and often need to fly farther from your country of residence. It may take some saving, but you’ll create amazing memories with your family and friends and unlock new passions for different outdoor hobbies. What were once unusual options for holidays are now becoming the preferred package for younger adults, couples, and outgoing outdoorsy individuals.

Romantic getaways are likely to be all the rage in 2025! Spikes are predicted in romantic trips for two in 2025 with more focus on locations like Portugal, Italy and the Canaries during Valentine’s weekend. As we get closer to summer and sunnier weather, these sites are pedalling holidays packages that include accommodations by the beach. With bundles on offer from the likes of Love Holidays and Budget Travel, couples can avail of a weekend city break to the Algarve or a beach trip to Costa del Sol at last minute’s notice. Most of these bundles include hotels and flights at reasonable prices per person (approx. 129 euro and upwards), making them more affordable and convenient for young adults. Planning your trip becomes much easier and less stressful. Activities in your chosen destination can be recommended by the accommodation staff and previous reviews. Researching the best places to visit before travelling to your preferred destination is always a good travel tip.

Based on the aforementioned trends, it is currently projected that we will see an uptick in holidays focused on experiences that transcend their daily lives. People are inspired by vistas and activities that make them feel like there are greater wonders out there to explore and envision. It is becoming more popular to turn off your devices and spend a week or two in the countryside with only other people and natural surroundings for company. Nightime activities like watching the Northern Lights, visiting late-night museums, or exuberant bonfires are more attractive to satisfy this type of wanderlust. An article from the BBC coined this style of travel as ‘noctourism’ which involves any and all experiences that can only be done after dark. While taking photographs will be trickier with lack of light, this is easily remedied with the right camera and the many natural phenomena are beautifully photogenic.

As we progress further into 2025, more travel trends will emerge as people take off for the odd weekend and holiday. TripAdvisor and other travel companies are investing in new artificial intelligence to create itineraries based on each users’ individual interests and coordinate your trips to your specific liking. Digital data is becoming more useful than ever in planning and optimise for a complication-free travel experience. Airlines already have converted to using mostly digital boarding passes and scanning luggage for weight restrictions. The goal here is not only to ensure convenience for customers but also to optimise the regular operations of the airports and airlines. Dr Björn Becker, Head of Lufthansa Group, stated in a recent interview with Future Travel Experience website that he believes Extended Reality (XR) may be used as in-flight entertainment and using personalised data to market to each passenger. Needless to say, manty of these trends continue on from 2024 into 2025, so we are seeing lots of positive progress in technology and customer-focused solutions.
